Smart Technology For A Greener Future

How do you keep track of and regulate air quality to deliver safe solutions?

We work in three stages. The first step is to get the data to keep an eye on. The second step is to use a proprietary AI system to look at the flow, graph shape, and other data to figure out what is causing it. Different pollutants make different shapes and series of graphs.

To figure out what is causing this, you could open the windows or turn on your air conditioner. Cleaning products are a popular source of air pollution in the home. There are two ways to solve this: use greener, more healthy cleaning products, or clean at 7 am instead of 10 am to give the pollutants time to get out of the way before entering the space.

The goal is to make the solutions as cheap and green as possible. Physical monitors and a computer program help us figure out what might go wrong through that path. Part of the answer can change. Some people might need an air purifier, which we suggest to some clients.

When we started, we made a monitor that could measure many different things. This is still one of our best-known products. Over a few years, we built the analytics system. We needed to be able to make sense of the data, and so we spent a lot of time building the system over that time. There is a new device called the memo that only measures CO2.

In France, all schools have to have carbon dioxide monitors because of the harmful indoor air. This product is aimed at that market and all needs because it’s a common problem that people have.

It’s essential to determine how well the ventilation is working, which connects to the Covid-19 risk of getting sick from poor ventilation. Our goal is to take these products and put them into building management systems to get an actual smart building, go even deeper into the analytics, get a lot more data so that we can figure out what causes pollution, and show how the air moves in space.

Which places are often under-ventilated, and what are the consequences?

This is one that people probably don’t think about but know is bad for their health. In meeting rooms, where there is a buildup of carbon dioxide, it can make people sleepy and tired. Many people also use printers and computers to get their work done, too. If you have a printer next to your desk, that’s bad for your health. Finally, there are cleaning products.

Polluted air in the workplace can make people tired, drowsy, have headaches, and not be as productive. There have been a lot of studies that show that cognitive functions, like being able to solve problems, can be affected. Even if the air isn’t nasty, it can significantly impact productivity: 15% to 50%. This can hurt productivity, hurting the company’s chances of making money. The health effects are usually caused by long-term exposure.

What does an intelligent building mean in terms of monitoring clean air?

That is the direction that the real estate industry is going. There are green building certifications, like LEED or BEAM, that say that you should keep an eye on things like air pollution and indoor air quality and things like energy use, water use, and so on.

The first step is to get data, the second is analytics to figure out what the data means, and the third is to use the data. It must also be automated for buildings or cities to be truly “smart.” Is there a way to fix this problem without having to do anything? We want to make our product work with building management systems.

How significant is sustainability presently in the maintenance of clean air?

I would say not very much. That’s what I think. Most of the time, air quality management focuses on the air outside because it can be seen. Sustainability is becoming more and more critical. A sharp back on energy use will be a big thing in the later few years. You have the government of Hong Kong’s plan to cut down on carbon dioxide. Building use is a big part of their strategy, and energy use is one of the biggest carbon dioxide emitters.

I think this will become more and more important. We like to work on the environment in two ways. The first thing is to use less energy, and the second thing is to come up with easy, low-cost solutions, like changing cleaning products or opening the windows, instead of pushing for things like air purifiers, which use energy when used and when they’re made. Our goal is to promote solutions that do not affect the environment.

What are meo’s future plans?
There is a lot of regulation in Asia and Europe about air quality, even though the air there isn’t always as bad. We work in both places. In the same way, air quality is also a social issue because it affects health. Because of this, we think that more people will be interested in getting the best air quality. There is a bunch of room for an increase in the air quality field. We also want to be a part of the story about how to be more environmentally friendly and use less energy.
